Imagine this: warm sun kissing your skin, the gentle sway of palm trees dancing in a tropical breeze, and turquoise waves playfully rolling onto caramel-colored sands. This idyllic scene was my recent reality, a blissful week spent soaking up the vibrant spirit of Mexico’s Mayan Riviera.
That was what I left behind.
My return was met with a stark contrast: a biting chill in the air, leafless brown trees bravely enduring strong winds, and the ghostly remnants of Halloween – solidly frozen Jack-o-lanterns leering at me from the front steps. Welcome back to northern Alberta, where winter was already making its frosty entrance.
That’s what I’ve returned to. The vibrant, sun-drenched memories of Mexico now feel a world away, a hazy dream against the backdrop of an encroaching winter.
Isn’t that the way holidays often are? No matter how incredibly amazing a trip was, within days – sometimes even hours – of returning home, it can feel as if you never left. The familiar surroundings, the comforting yet demanding routines, and the endless responsibilities of daily life tend to quickly whisk those precious holiday memories into some hidden, misty corner of your mind.
Thank goodness for photographs! They act as powerful conduits, flooding the mind with vivid recollections. With each glance, I’m almost back there again, on the pristine beach, the rhythmic crash of waves a soothing soundtrack, with absolutely nothing to do but ensuring the ice in my mojito lasts until the very last, refreshing sip.
Oh, it was an absolutely wonderful week! And adding to the excitement was being in Mexico during the captivating celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Despite its somewhat ominous name, this vibrant occasion is anything but frightening. It’s actually a beautiful, multi-day celebration filled with lively festivities, elaborate costumes, delicious treats, and people joyfully thronging the streets for la Fiesta. The streets buzzed with an infectious energy, painted faces and marigolds creating a kaleidoscope of color that honored ancestors with joy and remembrance.
One particular culinary experience from this trip remains etched in my memory. At La Hacienda restaurant within our stunning Aventura Spa Palace resort, we were treated to an appetizer that was as much a spectacle as it was a delight: guacamole, prepared right at our tableside by smiling, attentive Mexican waiters. The highlight? It was dramatically doused with flaming tequila! Watching the process unfold was captivating – the skilled preparation, the theatrical flare of the flames, and the enticing aroma that filled the air. And then, to taste it! The creamy richness of the avocado was perfectly complemented by the sharp, zesty counterpoint of the tequila, creating an explosion of flavor that was both familiar and excitingly new.
This unforgettable experience ignited a desire in me to recreate that magic at home. While I can’t provide the smiling waiters or the dramatic flames, I can certainly bring you a taste of that authentic Mexican delight. Here is my carefully crafted take on that incredible flaming Mexican dish – minus the actual flames, of course, for safety and simplicity. You’ll just have to imagine the theatrical flourish and provide your own cheerful ambiance.
Tequila Guacamole: The Recipe
Creating this Tequila Guacamole is a breeze, bringing the vibrant flavors of Mexico right to your kitchen. The key is fresh, ripe ingredients and a generous dash of love.
Ingredients:
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1 plum tomato, finely diced
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about ½ large lime, or 1 regular one)
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion
- 1 tablespoon tequila (silver or blanco is recommended for its clean flavor)
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to your spice preference)
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt (or to taste)
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, fresh
- Tortilla chips, crackers, or cut vegetables for dipping
Instructions:
1. Start by preparing your avocados. Carefully cut them in half lengthwise, gently remove the large pit, and then scoop out the creamy green flesh with a spoon. Transfer the avocado flesh to a medium-sized bowl or a plate.
2. Using a fork, mash the avocado until it reaches your desired consistency. Some prefer it chunky for texture, while others enjoy a smoother, creamier dip. Aim for “chunky smooth” – a nice balance that offers both richness and bite.
3. Once mashed, transfer the avocado to a serving bowl. Now, it’s time to add the flavor powerhouses! Stir in the finely diced plum tomato, fresh lime juice, finely chopped red onion, and of course, the star ingredient – tequila.
4. Next, incorporate the spices: cumin, cayenne pepper, and fine sea salt. These spices elevate the flavor profile, adding warmth and a subtle kick. Finally, fold in the fresh chopped cilantro. Stir everything together gently until all ingredients are well combined, ensuring the flavors are evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed – perhaps a little more salt, lime, or cayenne for extra zing.
Serve your sensational Tequila Guacamole immediately with a generous pile of crispy tortilla chips, crunchy baked pita chips, or an assortment of fresh raw vegetable sticks like carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers for a healthier option. And for those who truly want to capture the spirit of its inspiration – why not offer a shot of tequila on the side? ¡Hola! This dip is not just an appetizer; it’s an invitation to a fiesta, a mini-vacation in every bite.
Why Tequila in Guacamole?
You might wonder, why add tequila to a perfectly good guacamole? The answer lies in the nuanced complexity it brings. Tequila, particularly a good blanco (silver) tequila, introduces a bright, slightly earthy, and subtly sweet agave note that pairs remarkably well with the rich, creamy texture of avocado. Its alcohol content also helps to cut through the richness, preventing the guacamole from feeling too heavy, much like lime juice does but with an added layer of flavor. It doesn’t overpower; instead, it enhances, adding a sophisticated depth and a whisper of its Mexican origin, truly elevating this classic dip from good to extraordinary.
Tips for Perfect Guacamole:
- Choose Ripe Avocados: This is paramount. A ripe avocado will yield slightly to gentle pressure but won’t feel mushy. Unripe avocados are hard and lack flavor; overripe ones can be stringy and brown.
- Fresh Lime Juice is Key: Bottled lime juice simply doesn’t compare to the bright, zesty flavor of fresh-squeezed. It’s essential for both taste and preventing browning.
- Don’t Over-Mash: Unless you prefer a super smooth dip, a slightly chunky texture adds character and makes for a more satisfying mouthfeel.
- Prevent Browning: The lime juice helps, but for longer storage, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to create an airtight seal before refrigerating. You can also place an avocado pit in the center, though its effectiveness is debated.
- Adjust to Taste: Guacamole is personal! Feel free to adjust the amount of onion, cilantro, cayenne, and salt to suit your palate. Love a spicy kick? Add a finely minced jalapeño or serrano pepper.
Serving Suggestions:
While tortilla chips are the quintessential companion, don’t limit your horizons! Tequila Guacamole is fantastic with:
- Vegetable Sticks: Carrots, celery, bell peppers, cucumber slices – a healthy and refreshing option.
- Tacos and Burritos: A generous dollop instantly upgrades any Mexican main dish.
- Grilled Meats: Spoon it over grilled chicken, fish, or steak for a burst of freshness and flavor.
- Eggs: A dollop on scrambled eggs or an omelet makes for a vibrant breakfast or brunch.
- Sandwiches and Wraps: Spread it on instead of mayonnaise for a flavorful twist.
This Tequila Guacamole isn’t just a recipe; it’s a culinary journey back to sun-drenched beaches and vibrant fiestas. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of winter, a taste of sunshine and celebration can be found right in your own kitchen. So go ahead, whip up a batch, put on some mariachi music, and let the good times roll!
Guten Appetit!
