As the calendar page turned to January 5th, the new year truly began for me. The festive glow of Christmas holidays had faded, and the rhythm of daily life resumed. My son, Andreas, bravely returned to his final year of school, and my husband, Raymond, headed back to work. The jarring sound of the 6:30 AM alarm clock once again pierced the morning quiet, abruptly ending the cherished lazy mornings and late nights. While I wasn’t called in for substitute teaching this morning, leaving the day to my own devices, my mind has been buzzing with thoughts—thoughts about new beginnings, renewed purpose, and the perennial topic of New Year’s Resolutions.

Rethinking New Year’s Resolutions: Beyond Fleeting Promises

I’ve been contemplating New Year’s Resolutions extensively. What should mine be this year? The usual suspects spring to mind: Drink more water? Eat more fruit? Finally tackle the clutter in my studio, our bedroom, or the basement? Lose those stubborn ten pounds? Walk daily? Break habits like chewing my lips or slouching? Stop mindless snacking? Call family more often? Dress up a bit more? Get to bed earlier? Go to bed with a pristine kitchen every night?

My initial reaction is a resounding “Yes! Yes! And Yes!” Of course, all these things are beneficial and worthy of pursuit. But should they truly be elevated to the status of a “New Year’s Resolution”?

My considered answer now is “No! No! And No!” Assigning any of these to the special category of a New Year’s Resolution often gives them an unwelcome characteristic. It places them in a mental box, granting permission to “think-about-it-for-a-short-time-once-a-year-and-oops-slipped-up-so-forget-about-it-til-next-year” status. This cycle of well-intentioned starts and inevitable setbacks is all too familiar. I’ve been there, done that, more times than I care to count.

Instead, I’ve come to realize that these items on my list aren’t resolutions in the traditional sense. They need to be ingrained as part of my daily intention, woven into the fabric of my mindfulness. They are about a continuous striving to be the best version of myself, focusing on improving my physical well-being and enhancing my environment. They are ongoing commitments, not annual declarations.

For me, a true New Year’s Resolution must be something different, something more profound. It needs to be a concrete, actionable step that propels me toward the larger, long-held goals I set for myself years ago—those aspirations that once pulsed through my veins and beat in my heart when I was a young girl, imagining an eternity stretched out before me. The stark reality is, eternity is not on my side. It’s time to act, and act now.

Overcoming Fear and Embracing Action: My Personal Commitments

Last night, a palpable sense of unease settled over me. Thoughts that had been forming over the past few days were now buzzing intensely in my head. I needed to quiet them, resorting to a couple of glasses of wine before bed, but sleep remained elusive. I tossed, turned, and my thoughts spun endlessly.

This morning, I craved a serious shot of energy – a need perfectly met by the incredible cup of Power Coffee you see pictured above. Its remarkable ability to supercharge my day, coupled with its delicious flavor, has made it a favorite, even for someone like me who doesn’t typically drink coffee very often. This powerful brew isn’t just a morning pick-me-up; it’s a catalyst for clarity and courage.

My extensive thinking (I swear, the gears in my head were grinding so hard there was smoke coming out of my ears!) led me to an unwelcome realization: I’m often a big chicken. I’m frequently afraid to take risks. I pour immense effort into projects, only to retreat at the last minute, hiding in my comfortable shell. I shy away from taking the crucial leap that would move me out of my small, familiar bubble. I hesitate to take even the small, simple steps that would allow that bubble to sail freely into the world, fearing it might burst.

But it’s time to challenge that fear. Time to say, “So what?” If a bubble bursts, I can always blow new ones. This realization, fueled by my Power Coffee, gives me the courage to declare my New Year’s Resolutions publicly, right here in this space. I’ve always struggled with how much personal information to share online, finding it daunting to “hang my laundry out on the line” for all to see. Yet, this public declaration feels like the necessary commitment.

1. I Will Send My Book Out to Publishers.

Several years ago, I dedicated my heart and soul to writing a young adult novel, a manuscript spanning over 300 pages. It was an arduous process, turning my guts inside-out with every word. I confided in only a few people about its existence, then promptly hid it away. I agonized over perceived flaws, endlessly planning rewrites, edits, and polishes before I could even conceive of exposing its face to the world. And so, it has remained, gathering dust under a pile of forgotten things.

It might indeed be a piece of junk. But then again, it might not be. I will never know until I actually take action. So, I will begin. I will send this manuscript out into the world. If it is, in fact, a piece of junk, at least I will know, and I can then move on. I owe myself that much.

2. I Will Improve This Blog.

This ‘Kitchen Frau‘ blog is more than just a website; it is my passion, a true labor of love. It’s the place I turn to for escape, for fulfillment, and to recharge my creative energies. I thoroughly enjoy the entire process: conceiving new recipes, the act of cooking, the writing that brings stories to life, and the photography that captures it all. However, the technological aspects of maintaining a blog often terrify me. I frequently make mistakes that lead to disasters, leaving me flustered and unsure how to fix them. Consequently, I stick to “safe” ways of doing things on the computer, afraid of making those “stupid” mistakes. This fear has hindered the blog’s growth, keeping it static and at times cumbersome. I recognize the pressing need to either acquire the necessary technology skills to make this blog more dynamic or to enlist the help of someone who can guide me. Please bear with me as I take these tentative new steps to learn and grow in this area.

I finally dug out the manuscript from under the pile. It’s time to revisit it with fresh eyes and renewed determination.

Notice the strong, declarative “I will” in both of my resolutions. You, my dear readers, are my witnesses. Now, I have no choice but to follow through, or risk losing face. Those two simple words form my solemn contract with you. Gulp. It is written!

So, enough of all this heavy, introspective stuff for a moment. Let’s move on to the recipe. You’ve come for the coffee, and I promise you, this Power Coffee is well worth the journey.

Now, sit down, take a comforting sip, and tell me about your resolutions. I’m genuinely listening. And just so you know, I’ll be holding you accountable too!

A cup of Power Coffee is truly loaded with high-octane goodness, designed to provide you with a sustained energy boost that can last for hours. So, if one of your New Year’s Resolutions involves embracing a healthier lifestyle, you can confidently enjoy a morning mug of this powerful brew with a clear conscience. Let’s break down the incredible benefits of each ingredient:

The Wholesome Ingredients of Power Coffee

  1. Coffee: More Than Just a Pick-Me-Up

Coffee often gets an undeserved bad rap, but in moderation, it’s a surprising source of health benefits. Did you know that coffee contains powerful antioxidants that are good for you? Furthermore, a common misconception is that espresso is packed with more caffeine than regular brewed coffee. In reality, espresso actually contains less caffeine per serving than brewed coffee. The robust, stronger taste of espresso comes from the deeper roast of the beans, not a higher caffeine content, making it an ideal base for a sustained energy drink.

  2. Almond Milk: A Nutritious Dairy Alternative

Almonds are a nutritional powerhouse, renowned for being high in essential vitamins, vital minerals, plant-based protein, and heart-healthy fiber. Using almond milk as the base for your Power Coffee not only adds a creamy texture but also infuses it with these crucial nutrients, supporting overall wellness and providing a gentle, sustained energy release without the dairy.

  3. Virgin Coconut Oil: A Healthy Fat for Sustained Energy

Oh, don’t even get me started on the wonders of coconut oil! Coconut oil is heralded as an incredibly healthy fat, packed with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that the body readily converts into energy. This not only provides a fantastic mental and physical boost but also helps keep you feeling full and satisfied, curbing those cravings for sugary sweets and unhealthy snacks, making it an excellent addition for weight management and sustained focus.

  4. Raw Honey: Nature’s Sweet Energy Boost

Raw, unpasteurized honey is more than just a natural sweetener. It’s a natural energy source, providing easily digestible sugars. Beyond that, it contains health-boosting enzymes and possesses natural antibiotic properties, offering a gentle yet effective way to sweeten your coffee while adding a layer of beneficial compounds.

  5. Cinnamon: The Super-Spice with Amazing Benefits

And then there’s cinnamon – wow! This super-spice is truly remarkable. Research suggests that just ½ teaspoon per day can help lower cholesterol and boasts a wide array of amazing health-boosting properties, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Incorporating it into your coffee might just curb your cravings for less healthy treats like cinnamon buns! If you’re new to the idea of cinnamon in your coffee, start with ¼ teaspoon and gradually increase to ½ teaspoon as your palate adjusts.

We use a very inexpensive espresso machine, and it consistently does the job just fine, proving you don’t need fancy equipment for great coffee.

Now, let’s get to the star of the show! Kickstart your day and your year with a steaming mug of . . . ta-daaaaaaaa :

Power Coffee: The Recipe

This recipe yields one energizing serving, perfect for starting your day with focus and vitality.

Ingredients:

  • 1 shot espresso (or 2, for an extra boost!)
  • 1 cup (240ml) almond milk (for a fresher taste and more control, consider making your own; see the recipe below*)
  • 1 heaped teaspoon virgin coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (maple syrup or raw agave nectar can be substituted for a vegan version), or adjust to your preferred sweetness
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Optional Add-ins for Enhanced Health Benefits:

  • 1 vitamin E capsule (simply prick with a sharp knife tip and squeeze in the contents)
  • 1 vitamin D3 tablet (crush or dissolve if preferred)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Espresso: Begin by preparing your espresso shot(s) according to your machine’s instructions. Set aside.
  2. Warm Milk Mixture: In a small saucepan on the stove, or in a microwave-safe mug, gently heat the almond milk, coconut oil, honey, and cinnamon. If you’re using homemade almond milk, be cautious not to boil it, as it lacks stabilizers and can curdle. Heat until it’s just hot to the touch (test with a quick finger dip). Should it curdle, whisk vigorously; the coconut oil will help it emulsify and smooth out again.
  3. Combine and Whisk: Carefully add the hot espresso to the warmed milk mixture. If you’re including the optional vitamins, add them now. Whisk the entire mixture vigorously until the cinnamon is thoroughly distributed and the coffee becomes wonderfully frothy.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Pour your freshly made Power Coffee into a large mug. Settle in and savor this invigorating beverage.

Warning: The consumption of this potent beverage may trigger a significant surge of energy and a renewed, unwavering dedication to any flagging resolutions. Drink in moderation, embrace the revitalizing ride, and watch your productivity soar!

* Homemade Almond Milk: Freshness You Can Taste

Making your own almond milk is surprisingly simple and allows you to control the ingredients, avoiding unwanted additives often found in store-bought versions. It offers a fresh, pure taste that elevates your Power Coffee experience.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw whole almonds
  • 6 cups (1.5 litres) filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon honey or raw agave nectar, optional (adjust to taste)
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Soak Almonds: Place the raw whole almonds in a jar along with 2 cups (500ml) of the filtered water. Cover the jar and place it in the refrigerator to soak overnight, or for a minimum of 4 hours. Soaking helps soften the almonds and makes them easier to blend, while also improving digestibility.
  2. Blend: Drain the soaking water off the almonds. Transfer the soaked nuts to the canister of a high-speed blender, adding the remaining 4 cups (1 liter) of fresh filtered water.
  3. Achieve Smoothness: Blend on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. This process might take several minutes in a regular blender, but typically only about one minute in a powerful high-speed blender.
  4. Strain the Milk: To separate the milk from the pulp, squeeze the blended nuts through a fine-mesh nut milk bag. Alternatively, you can strain the mixture three times using a fine-meshed sieve. When using a sieve, stir the milk within the sieve to help it pass through, and then press down on the remaining pulp with the back of a spoon to extract every last drop of the rich nut milk. Remember to rinse the sieve between each pass-through to prevent clogging.
  5. Reserve Pulp: Do not discard the almond pulp! It’s a versatile ingredient that can be reserved for other culinary uses. It works wonderfully in pancake, muffin, or cake batters, adds texture to smoothies, can be incorporated into meatloaf, or even cooked along with your morning porridge. The pulp can also be frozen for later use.
  6. Season and Store: Add the optional sweetener (honey or agave nectar) and the pinch of sea salt to your freshly strained almond milk. If using honey, you may need to give it one more quick whiz in the blender to ensure it’s thoroughly mixed.
  7. Storage: Store your homemade almond milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will keep fresh for 3 to 4 days. Always stir or shake well before using to re-incorporate any settled particles.

This recipe yields approximately 4 cups of delicious, fresh almond milk.
