My Unexplained Illness: A Desperate Search for Relief
Thirteen years ago, my life took an unexpected and terrifying turn when I was struck by a mysterious and profoundly debilitating medical issue. It began quite suddenly, without any apparent trigger, but with devastating effects. Every single bite of food I ate became a source of excruciating abdominal pain. This wasn’t just a discomfort; it was the kind of pain that forced me to curl up in a tight ball on the couch, clutching my stomach, moaning softly as waves of intense agony washed over me.
The initial symptoms emerged while we were enjoying a visit to my parents’ remote cabin in British Columbia, marking the end of summer. At first, I tried to rationalize it, convincing myself it was merely a stubborn flu bug that I just needed to tough out. However, as the days progressed, my condition didn’t improve; in fact, the pain intensified, growing more severe and persistent, leaving me increasingly bewildered and anxious.
Upon our return home from the cabin, I immediately consulted my doctor. She initiated a comprehensive series of tests, including an emergency ultrasound, with a strong suspicion of gall bladder issues given the nature of my pain. To our surprise, every single test result came back negative. There seemed to be absolutely no medical explanation for the intense, agonizing pain I was enduring daily. This lack of diagnosis was both frustrating and frightening.
During this period, life, as it always does, continued to demand my attention. I had a household to manage, including my husband and four children, whose ages ranged from six to sixteen, along with a teenage German exchange student living with us. Cooking for a family of seven was a monumental task when every interaction with food promised more suffering. It became an immense struggle just to prepare meals and get them onto the table before I had to retreat to the couch, seeking solace in a curled-up position. The only sustenance I could tolerate without triggering severe pain was a thin, gruel-like oatmeal, which I sipped incredibly slowly. Within a mere fourteen days, I lost a staggering thirteen pounds. Despite various medications prescribed by my doctor, nothing offered even the slightest relief. I distinctly remember lying on our deck swing, tears streaming down my cheeks, consumed by fear and uncertainty about what was happening to my body.
Discovering a Natural Remedy: The Power of Beets and Apples
I was desperate, actively searching for any glimmer of hope or a potential solution. At the time, extensive computer research wasn’t as prevalent as it is today, so I poured over every health book I owned. Time and again, my research led me to recurring information about the significant benefits of beets for healing digestive issues. I also recalled reading somewhere that a three-day fast consisting solely of apple and beet juice had helped some individuals with severe stomach problems. This resonated even more when a Swiss friend shared a common remedy from her childhood: they were always given a raw apple to eat whenever they suffered from stomach aches.
It was September, and serendipitously, our garden was overflowing with an abundance of organically grown beets. Seizing on this natural resource, I promptly purchased several bags of organic apples from a local health food store, determined to try this natural approach. I invested in a good juicer and began the process. My strategy was simple: I mixed equal quantities of freshly extracted apple juice and beet juice, then cautiously began to sip this vibrant concoction. To my immense relief and cautious optimism, my stomach seemed to tolerate it. A flicker of hope ignited within me, a feeling I hadn’t experienced in weeks.
The Apple Beet Juice Fast: My Road to Recovery
I committed entirely to the apple beet juice fast. After just one full day of consuming only this potent, nutrient-rich liquid, I noticed a subtle but definite improvement in my condition. The sharp edges of the pain seemed to soften, and the constant discomfort lessened. By the third day, the transformation was remarkable; I felt almost entirely like my old self again. The pain had subsided to a point where I could actually function and contemplate eating regular food without immediate dread. However, the fear of triggering my symptoms again, of reliving that excruciating pain, was intense. This apprehension led me to continue the beet juice fast for an additional three days, wanting to ensure my system had ample time to fully recover and stabilize.
As I slowly and cautiously began to reintroduce solid foods back into my diet, I was absolutely elated to discover that I was indeed my old self again. All the pain, which had consumed my life for weeks, was completely gone. The relief was overwhelming, a profound sense of gratitude washing over me.
To this very day, I have no idea what exactly was happening within my system during that harrowing period. The medical tests yielded no answers, leaving the cause of my suffering a mystery. However, about a year later, the symptoms returned once more, though thankfully, this time they were milder. Without hesitation, I immediately initiated my apple and beet juice protocol again. Within just a few days of following this regimen, the pain completely disappeared, reaffirming my belief in the healing efficacy of this simple juice.
Since that second, milder episode, I have never again experienced those awful, debilitating symptoms. The exact nature of my illness remains an enigma, but one thing I know with unwavering certainty is that the apple beet juice played a pivotal role in my recovery and ultimately, cured me. I understand that this might sound like an exaggerated testimony, but it is the honest truth of what transpired in my own life.
Every autumn, I now make it a ritual to prepare several batches of this vibrant apple and beet juice. I drink it with immense gratitude, each sip a reminder of the healing it brought. The humble, earthy beet, combined with the sweet, ancient fruit of the apple, will forever symbolize healing and resilience in my mind. Indeed, an apple (and a beet!) a day really does seem to keep the doctor away, at least in my personal experience.

Kitchen Frau Notes: I want to be clear that I make no specific medical claims for any healing properties of these juices and can only share my personal story and experience. While the apple beet juice appeared to heal my specific digestive problems, the exact medical condition remains undiagnosed. However, it’s widely recognized that raw fruit and vegetable juices, in general, are excellent for promoting overall good health. They are packed with essential vitamins, vital minerals, beneficial phytonutrients, powerful antioxidants, and living enzymes, all of which contribute to well-being. And, beyond all the health benefits, they simply taste wonderfully refreshing and delicious!
Apple Beet Juice Recipe
Creating this rejuvenating apple beet juice is incredibly simple and requires only two primary ingredients. For the best flavor and nutritional benefits, I always recommend using organic produce whenever possible.
- Raw organic beets
- Raw organic apples
Instructions:
Preparation: Begin by thoroughly washing both your apples and beets under cold running water. Carefully trim off any blemishes or bruised spots from both. For the beets, cut off the leafy tops and the small root ends. You’ll also want to peel off the slightly woody skin around the very top of the beet bulb using a paring knife. The remaining thin skin on the body of the beet can be left on, as it contains beneficial nutrients and is easily processed by most juicers. For the apples, you can leave both the peel and the cores intact, as these parts also hold significant nutritional value. Once cleaned, cut the beets and apples into halves or quarters, ensuring the pieces are small enough to comfortably fit into the feed tube of your electric juicer appliance.
Juicing: Process the apples and the beets separately in your electric juicer. This allows you to control the ratios and ensures a smooth extraction from each ingredient. Once you have both juices, combine equal amounts of the fresh apple juice and fresh beet juice in a pitcher or container. Stir gently to mix them thoroughly.
Storage & Serving: This fresh apple beet juice is best enjoyed immediately for maximum nutrient retention. However, you can store any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Always give it a good stir before serving, as some separation may occur. It tastes absolutely best when well chilled, or for an extra refreshing experience, serve it over a few ice cubes. This vibrant, naturally sweet, and earthy juice is a true delight.
Guten Appetit!
