It’s not just a treat for your taste buds; it’s a powerhouse of nutrients designed to replenish, rejuvenate, and keep you energized throughout your day.

I recently embarked on my second 30-Day Hot Yoga Challenge, and honestly, I’m still wondering what possessed me to sign up for it again! Especially with June being such an incredibly busy month for me. Sometimes, I feel like I’m constantly running on fumes, simply trying to navigate one day at a time. The thought of all the long-term commitments on my schedule often makes me want to burrow under a pile of blankets and disappear until the month is over.

I know many of you can relate to this feeling of overwhelming busyness. Life often throws a barrage of commitments our way, and we find ourselves asking: why do we take on so much? What makes us believe we can truly handle it all without feeling completely drained?

For me, on top of substitute teaching several days a week, my schedule has been packed with the year-end wrap-up for German School, which includes writing detailed report cards for my class of 14 energetic kindergarten students. There’s also the planning of numerous social gatherings – some intimate, some quite large – coupled with working on two substantial writing projects. And let’s not forget the never-ending yard and garden work that piles up when you live on an acreage with two expansive gardens. Oh, and the constant culinary challenge of cooking for a family with multiple food allergies (because, of course, they can’t all be allergic to the same things – that would be far too convenient!).

So, amidst all this, I somewhat impulsively signed up for a month of daily hot yoga. Living outside of town, this isn’t just an hour of exercise; it usually translates into a two to three-hour commitment by the time I factor in travel, a post-workout shower, and a quick stop for errands on the way home. It sounds like adding more to an already overflowing plate, doesn’t it?

But here’s the beautiful truth: this daily yoga practice is purely for me. It’s a conscious effort to refill my well, to nurture my body and mind, and the results are truly starting to feel magical. While I typically aim for hot yoga a couple of times a week, committing to it every single day has brought about profound changes. The first week was, as expected, a symphony of aches in muscles I didn’t even know existed. My joints creaked with every movement, seizing up if I sat for too long. By the second week, however, a noticeable shift began. I found myself standing a bit straighter, turning my head further back for a shoulder check in the car. Now, entering the third week, I’m walking with a genuine bounce in my step, my chronic lower back pain is significantly easing, and I swear I feel at least a little bit taller! My shoulders naturally pull back, and I feel remarkably lighter and more limber. It’s truly incredible!

Each day, I eagerly anticipate my yoga session. There’s something deeply satisfying about the feeling of sweating profusely in that hot, humid room. The sweat trickles down my face, arms, and body in rivulets, even reaching the tops of my feet! I constantly remind myself that this intense sweating is flushing out toxins, a natural detoxification process that feels as beneficial as a daily sauna. I observe small but significant improvements each day: bending a few millimeters deeper into poses, holding a twist for a little longer, and now, in pigeon pose, feeling my belly gently brush the ground. While I may not possess the same flexibility as I did in my 20s, and perhaps touching my nose to my knees is a distant dream, these small, consistent “baby steps” are immensely satisfying and motivate me to continue.

A platter of vibrant mangoes. The smaller, bright yellow ones are often the incredibly sweet Ataulfo variety, perfect for this smoothie.

After a demanding hot yoga session, my body invariably craves hydration and nourishment. This is precisely when I reach for a revitalizing shake – sometimes my Great Green Smoothie, but most often, this delectable Magic Mango Smoothie. This particular blend is a nutritional powerhouse, carefully crafted to support my post-workout recovery and general well-being. The base of sweet banana and luscious mango provides natural energy and a wealth of vitamins. The addition of plain yogurt offers a valuable protein boost, essential for muscle repair and satiety, keeping me feeling full and satisfied. What truly sets this smoothie apart for post-exercise replenishment is the unsweetened coconut water, nature’s perfect source of natural electrolytes, crucial for rehydrating and balancing minerals lost through profuse sweating in the hot yoga studio.

The golden secret ingredient, turmeric, is a healing natural anti-inflammatory spice renowned for its active compound, curcumin. Turmeric helps to alleviate muscle soreness and aids in the recovery of those hard-working muscles pushed to their limits during exercise. While turmeric possesses a mild, earthy flavor that is slightly discernible, it beautifully integrates into the overall profile, especially when complemented by a splash of fresh lemon juice, a touch of honey (or maple syrup for a vegan option), and a hint of vanilla. I’ve grown to truly love the unique flavor of turmeric, perhaps because my mind intrinsically understands just how beneficial it is for my body.

I often prepare a double batch of this Magic Mango Smoothie and store several days’ worth in convenient lidded mugs in the fridge. This makes it effortless to grab one as I head out the door for hot yoga, allowing me to sip on this soothing, nutrient-rich beverage on my revitalizing journey home.

Truly, any day is the perfect day to enjoy a delightful and nutritious mango smoothie!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (10 oz/300gms) diced mango, fresh or frozen
  • 1 large ripe banana fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup (240ml) coconut water (unsweetened)
  • ½ cup (120ml) plain yogurt (or soft tofu, soaked cashews*, or coconut yogurt for vegan or dairy-free option)
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice to taste
  • 1 tablespoon honey, optional or maple syrup for vegan option
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients into a high-speed blender. Process until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. Begin with one tablespoon of lemon or lime juice, then taste and adjust. You can add more citrus juice if you prefer a tangier smoothie, which often depends on the natural sweetness of your mango and banana.
  • *If you opt to use soaked cashews for a vegan or dairy-free alternative (soak ½ cup cashews for at least 20 minutes in filtered water, then drain thoroughly), you might find the smoothie to be quite thick. In this case, simply add a bit more coconut water, one tablespoon at a time, until you achieve your desired consistency.
  • Any leftover smoothie can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days, making it perfect for meal prepping.
  • This recipe yields approximately 3½ cups (850ml) of delicious, refreshing smoothie.

Notes

For an extra chilled and thick smoothie, use frozen mango and/or frozen banana. If you use both, the smoothie may be quite thick; simply add a bit more coconut water until it reaches your preferred drinking consistency.

When selecting coconut water, always aim for a brand that is 100% pure coconut water with no additives, preservatives, or added sugars, ensuring you get the most natural electrolytes and benefits.

Superstore (and many other grocery stores) often sells convenient 600gm bags of frozen mango chunks. If fresh mangoes are out of season or not readily available, using half a bag of frozen mango in this recipe is an excellent alternative. Alternatively, during peak mango season, buy them fresh, cube them, spread them on cookie sheets to freeze individually, then transfer them to freezer-safe bags for future use.
